Fabric, bit by bit

I just made an online purchase with Alewives Fabric (recommended by and on SouleMama). They have such beautiful choices!!!!! Apparently they also have other resources like yarn, classes and books. I haven't started my Christmas Sewing Lessons with Physh yet, but even though June is crazy I'll get there! I might even start reading the sites she sent me earlier just so I can get going. :) Here are the patterns I selected: Persia Teal
Park Phlox
Blue Metallic Moons (I forsee eye pillows or something in the way of homemade gifts)
Strawberry Cottage
Butterflies Aqua Metallic
I don't know what it is about me and blue these days--loving it. Friends and loved ones, don't be surprised if you see cloth napkins or something like that in your future.

Z Turns 4, Party Saturday

Things are mostly ready for Z's birthday party which is tomorrow morning. We still need to set out food, find our nice tablecloth etc. The kids will repot begonias in little clay pots and decorate tote bags with fabric paint and markers for garden produce. The theme will be the garden so hopefully those things will work out for our sweet little people.
We have here the big doll gift ready and wrapped in a silk. Her doll has a birthday crown just like hers. She's getting very excited as she starts to see decorations and hints of party coming. The book is something I made in lieu of a birthday card--it reflects on the last years, her current interests and the birthday itself. In the center there is our birthday ring which we set up for each one of us. The rainbow silk is draped on the birthday person's chair, and we have the pink birthday crown just for Z.
We laid down on a birthday pillowcase tonight and read the birthday poem I found on Frontier Dreams: When I have said my evening prayer, And my clothes are folded on the chair, And mother switches off the light, I'll still be ___ years old tonight. But from the very break of day, Before the children rise and play, Before the darkness turns to gold, Tomorrow, I'll be ___ years old. ___ kisses when I wake, ___ candles on my cake.

Teacher Appreciation

It's our week to appreciate the girls' teachers.
They both made cards like Z's here, and we gave them a book we love and some homemade peppermint lip balm. The inspiration and recipe for the lip balm are found at Amanda Soule's incredible site, SouleMama (which inspires me daily).

Zoë's kid-centered favors ended up being more extensive than we thought since we planned and worked on them over time.
pads, crayons, seeds, stickers, playdough, a small animal from ponds, tattoos and a princess marker or pencil

preparing for Z's party

Some of Zoë's party favors are strawberry preserves that I made. Zoë made small Spring lanterns for the overflow.
She worked with me on the labels--see her little strawberries colored on them?
We've already started a little of the decorating...

Joining a CSA

I never thought we'd have the chance to join a local CSA. Enter Taylor Creek Farm. We live in a small town that seemed incapable of making space for my dreams of community, natural health and earth-conscious living. I was so wrong. I keep meeting people in my generation who are doing something about their beliefs and not just in their own gardens/homes. They're getting busy. It's wonderful to be part of that and to get to know others with similar values. Here's what we bought today just from their leftovers:
We're grilling the fennel, radishes and zucchini. I'll juice those beets, and we'll have some lovely salads with the lettuce. We also picked up some expensive but healthy grass-fed Angus Beef from Indian Creek Angus (out of Carnesville).
